Step back in time to the splendor of the Gilded Age with a guided tour of The Mount, a 42-room home designed and built by Edith Wharton in 1902. Lunch will be served on the terrace overlooking formal gardens, which are among the most exquisite in New England. Our meal is choice of sandwich, with a salad followed by desert and coffee or tea; please indicate your choice on the registration form. After lunch, we will stroll through the gardens or visit the bookstore.
We will continue on to Naumkeag, the Choate family country estate for three generations. Designed by McKim, Mead, and White, this 44-room “cottage” was bequeathed in its entirety in 1958. Our guided tour will also include the magnificent gardens, which include the Afternoon Garden, Tree Peony Terrace, Evergreen Garden, and Chinese Garden. Please note that this visit includes stairs, and the grounds are steep in some areas.
