Cedar Grove and Olana—RSVP deadline extended to 10/13

Enjoy beautiful fall foliage in the Hudson River Valley and relive American history with docent guided tours of the homes and grounds of two of America’s best known Hudson River School artists: Thomas Cole and Frederic Church. Take in the majestic and awe-inspiring vistas that were once the inspiration for these great landscape painters while hearing about their life stories.

Our first stop is the Federal-style house at Cedar Grove, now a National Historic Site and the former home of Thomas Cole. Our guide will take us though the main house and charming Old Studio. Please note that the house has numerous steps and does not have an elevator. We will also visit Cole’s “New Studio,” originally built in 1846 according to Thomas Cole’s own design. Currently on display in the “New Studio” is the special exhibition Sanford R. Gifford in the Catskills. Gifford was a second generation Hudson River School artist whose work was inspired by Thomas Cole; the exhibition features about 20 paintings of the Catskills that are on loan from institutions including the Yale University Art Gallery, Harvard University Art Museum, and Portland Museum of Art, as well as private collections including those of the artist’s descendants.

Our next stop will be for lunch at nearby Frank Guido’s Port of Call Restaurant. Soft drinks, coffee, tea, and Italian Cookies are included.

After lunch we will visit Olana, the grand estate of Frederic Edwin Church. Working together with architect Calvert Vaux, Church helped to design and site this palatial Persian-style home overlooking the Hudson River Valley and the foothills of the Catskill Mountains where Church and his teacher, Thomas Cole, sketched for more than a decade.

After our guided tour of this amazing house, we will have ample time to explore the Museum Shop and enjoy our picturesque surroundings.
